Portuguese term

a cabeça amarrada

Portuguese to English Art/Literary Folklore Cape Verdian text on death
I'm proofreading a document that has been translated from PT > EN - subtitles from a documentary set in Cape Verde, a woman describing the death of her father. The translator has written "with his head tied up" - is this right? (To give more context, her father was always joking that he was going to die and on the day he did it was a shock to everyone, it's not clear if he was ill). Is he wearing some kind of turban?

“No momento fiquei espantada a admirar aquilo... Ele estava ali quieto... com a cabeça amarrada...”

“Quando morre amarram-lhe a cabeça e depois disso, se o enterro for só no dia seguinte,”

Nick Taylor Oct 10, 2017:
It could be this (although it is muslim) When the person is confirmed dead:

Family members or those who are present should first say:Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un [Verily we belong to Allah, and truly to Him shall we return]

Close the eyes of the deceased.

They should bind his lower jaw to his head so that it does not sag.
@Sarah May I have your email? I saved the document. My email is: [email protected]

Thanks both of you for your input - I can't open the link Teresa, restricted access. Do you know why his head would be tied up?

I could not open Teresa's link here in my PC. She always has good references as well, so the answer might be there too.
@Sarah It's not a turban, his head is just tied up. Please see explanation on page 56 (in Portuguese): https://www.codesria.org/IMG/pdf/m_da_veiga_correia_maria_ma...

head wrapped

I guess it's a reference to some sort of head wrap. I found an article that talks about a local custom of wrapping the entire body when a person dies. See page 95 of the book referenced below.

The word "amarrar" has double meaning: tie or wrap. Tie doesn't seem to make much sense in this context.
