Japanese term

特別研究事業

Japanese to English Medical Medical (general) Research
I am translating a post-fact assessment report about patient registries and came across a reference to a specific 特別研究事業 with the reference number H27-特別-指定-018.

The only thing close to an English translation that I could find was "JSPS Research" here: https://www.jsps.go.jp/j-grantsinaid/16_rule/rule.html (the full term I found was "grant-in-aid for JSPS research fellow"). However, I don't think that is the correct term in this case since that term is for the JSPS and the context here specifically states that this is a 特別研究事業 for the MHLW. I was able to find a list of these projects on the MHLW website here: https://www.mhlw.go.jp/bunya/kenkyuujigyou/hojokin-koubo16/0... but that is about it. I also have no clue where to start with that reference number.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

study group (supported by the MHLW)

I think 特別研究事業 is just short for 厚生労働科学特別研究事業 in general. I'm not entirely sure, but if that turns out to be the case, anything you find on the JSPS page would be relevant.

厚生労働科学特別研究事業 has been translated as "health-ministry funded study group," "study group sponsored by [the MHLW]," etc. in the English version of Nikkan Yakugyo.

I believe that reference number is specifically for the study group that was used to form the Clinical Innovation Network (CIN).

Research Fellow

Michael answered with a much deeper answer to your question, and all I did was research some online Japanese/English medical dictionaries to get Research Fellow.
Note from asker:
Thank you for taking the time to suggest an answer. I went with Michael's answer because the Japanese talks about a project/group and not an individual person. If they were talking about a person, then I think Research Fellow would have been a more appropriate answer.
