Japanese to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering train car manufacture

bolster/bolster beam

beam / girder

--- I believe it is a structural part (a beam).

--- The definition of はり is beam or girder [Source Shogakukan J-E Dictionary]

--- Here are the English and Japanese Wikipedia definitions:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/梁_(建築)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beam_(structure)
A beam is a structural element that is capable of withstanding load primarily by resisting bending. The bending force induced into the material of the beam as a result of the external loads, own weight, span and external reactions to these loads is called a bending moment.

Optimum design of the sides of a railroad car
The sides of the gondola car are modelled by beam and plate finite elements. Manufacturing requirements are accounted for by design variable linking and the side are designed subject to stress buckling and displacement constraints. The design is according to the specifications for design, fabrication and construction of freight cars recommended by the Association of Americal Railroads.
