千利休の茶道の心得を読んだ短歌「規矩作法  守り尽くして 破るとも 離るるとても 本ぞ忘るな」が起源です。

一般的には以下のように説明されます。

「破」 自分独自に工夫して、指導者の教えになかった方法を試してみます。
「離」 指導者のもとから離れて、独自の境地を拓いて一流を編み出すこと
