Discussion

Peter Close Oct 10, 2012:
Out of the three alternative answers given so far, i.e., those of Maya Fourioti, Dylan Edwards and myself, and after having given the question more thought, I think Dylan's answer is the best. I was tempted to give this answer myself when I first saw the question, and only chose not to because the Greek text included the words, "σύμφωνα με όλους τους τύπους του". However, Greek is a much more flowery language than English is and the Greeks frequently use five or ten words in situations where the English would use one or two. Although the Greek text says, "According to all formalities/conventions/ceremonies/customs of a civil marriage", the answer that Dylan gives expresses the meaning perfectly clearly and succinctly in English, because, for a civil marriage to happen, all of the formalities/conventions/ceremonies or customs will have to be fulfilled, and so it is not necessary to say so in English.

by civil ceremony

Just another option.

A ceremony is by definition formal, i.e. performed in accordance with all the formalities.

according to all formalities of a civil marriage

"Τύπος" can also mean "formality". "Τυπικότητα" is not the only word for "formality", and many formalities have to be observed and/or fulfilled before a civil marriage can take place in Greece. For a list of these formalities, please see the websites given.
