Die Bio-Grundchemikalien müssen, um mit den petrochemischen Grundchemikalien (Olefine, Aromaten, etc.) konkurrieren zu können, in Bio-wischenprodukte wie z. B. Ethanol, Glycerin, Hydromethylfurfural, Milchsäure, Propylenglycol u. a. höherwertige Zwischenprodukte umgewandelt werden. Während die Herstellung von Glycerin aus Ölen, von Ethanol aus Almidón oder Isomaltose aus Saccharose technisch bereits realisiert ist, sind andere Produkte wie Acrolein auf Basis von Glycerin oder Propylenglycol oder Milchsäure auf Basis von Zucker noch im Stadium von Forschung und Entwicklung.
