Die Anschaffung und der Einsatz einer Bandspülmaschine ist vor allem dort rentabel, wo regelmäßig erhebliche Mengen schmutzigen Geschirrs anfallen, und wo dieses auch innerhalb eines bestimmten Zeitraumes gereinigt werden muss, so zum Beispiel in großen Mensen und Kantinen. Die Nutzung dieses Typus lohnt sich allerdings wirklich nur dann, wenn eine ununterbrochene Zufuhr an Schmutzgeschirr besteht. Treten größere Lücken oder Schwankungen der Geschirrmenge auf, kann das System schon nicht mehr ökonomisch laufen.
Bei der Bandspülmaschine fährt kontinuierlich ein Transportband, das mit speziellen Halterungen für die einzelnen Geschirrteile versehen ist, durch das Spülgerät.

Mittlerweile wurden Modelle entwickelt, die über eine Automatik verfügen, welche das Band sofort stoppt, wenn kein Geschirr mehr auf der Fläche vor der Maschine – der sogenannten Vorfläche - steht, wo das Geschirr üblicherweise aufgereiht wird. Diese Automatik funktioniert über eine Lichtschranke, die auf den Kontakt mit dem Geschirr reagiert. Wird dieser Kontakt unterbrochen, wird das Band in der Folge angehalten. Am Ende des Förderbands befindet sich eine weitere Lichtschranke, die eine Kontrollfunktion erfüllt. Diese registriert ob das Geschirr am Ende des Spülvorgangs angekommen ist.

Eine handelsübliche Bandspülmaschine hat je nach Modell pro Stunde einen Durchlauf von ungefähr 1000 bis hin zu 2000 Tellern.
