This is for an itinerary of a boat cruise along the Amazon. I have no idea what this could mean, and no other context to offer. My only guess is that it has something to do with Brazilian history. Can anyone offer any help here?

disagree  Cetacea: caoutchouc is indeed natural rubber, and while it is not wood, it is also a tree, specifically the one natural rubber is gained from and the source of the so called rubber boom in the Amazon.

neutral  Lancashireman: Sorry, Beatriz, but this really does not add anything to what was already posted within the first half hour. The target readership are clearly English-speaking river cruise passengers to whom any term other than ‘rubber’ would mean nothing.
