a better term maybe: youth squad (squad implies pre-selection for future potential I think)
Peer comment(s):

agree Oliver Annacker : Youth team is the most common of these options, I'd say.

agree Lancashireman : Yes, 'youth team' in this context. (The 'reserves' also include players in the latter stage of their career)

agree petrolhead : Youth team in this context. I will go along with Andrew's argument. The club's reserves are usually a "B" team which often competes in a different league from the same club's reserves
5 hrs
agree Robert Kleemaier : without further context this is IMHO the safest bet

Reserve team

One might find "Chelsea reserves" in one of the junior leagues in the UK; it is another expression very common, along with "A" - just the same as here - to indicate the "second team". The terms are interchangeable to a major extent, along with the one already offered.

Another possibility, and particularly if you are talking schools football, would be \"colts\", although this may apply more to rugby football.
Peer comment(s):

agree Oliver Annacker : Reserve/youth/youngsters. Not colts in this context, IMHO.
