German term or phrase: helfende Berufe
Is there an accepted term in English for this? Here is the definition in German. The best I can come up with is
"social service professions."

Boy, did I find out that there are a LOT of terms for this. However, sometimes it IS just as simple as this.

Thanks to everyone.

agree  Frosty: Just the term if it needs to be a wee bit high class! Especially when History, Geography etc are lumped together as `Humanities´ in schools!

health and helping professions

Explanation:
Health professions encompass professions such as physicians, registered nurses, pharmacists etc., whereas helping professions cover occupations in counseling, social work, and psychology etc.

Individuals are called health professionals if they participate in delivery of health care in some way.

IMO you need to distinguish between the health professions such as physicians and social work. In health care the physician-social work relationship is important, delivering patient treatment by sharing common goals and objectives, but there's just not one single term covering all of those professions.

"helping professions" is BTW an established term for social service occupations.
