· scientific/technical which will be represented by Professor W. Schmidt, FH Gelsenkirchen and Institute for Environmental and Waste Management GmbH in Iserlohn;

· practical application oriented which will be represented by employees of eleven public and private companies which operate C-P plants; these companies treat approx. 75% of waste treatable by C-P plants in their facilities; all plants represented are certified as specialized waste disposal operations in accordance with the 1995 directive (Verordnung über Entsorgungsfachbetriebe - EfbV) and/or DIN ISO 9001.

An application-oriented description and comprehensive inventory of best demonstrated available techniques is presented which synthesizes theory and practice. This syngergistic combination of research and hands-on experience results in a level of excellence which could not otherwise have been achieved.

1.1 Die Autoren
Die Autoren dieses Berichtes können zwei Bereichen zugeordnet werden:
• der wisschenschaftlich-technische Bereich wird vertreten von Herrn Professor W.

• der anwendungsbezogene, praxisorientierte Bereich wird vertreten durch Mitarbeiter
von elf öffentlich-rechtlichen sowie privat-rechtlichen Gesellschaften, die
C-P Anlagen betreiben; diese Gesellschaften behandeln ca. 75 % der in C-P Anlagen
behandelbaren Abfälle in ihren Anlagen; alle vertretenen Anlagen sind zertifiziert
nach der Verordnung für Entsorgungsfachbetriebe bzw. DIN ISO 9001.
Durch die Kooperation von Wissenschaft und Praxis wird einerseits ein anspruchvolles
Niveau des Berichtes erreicht, andererseits eine aktuelle Bestandsaufnahme der Best-
Verfügbaren Technik in der Praxis ermöglicht. Auf Grund von Veränderungen der Produktionsprozesse
sowie der eingesetzten Hilfsstoffe kommt es auch zu Veränderungen
der unvermeidbaren Abfälle. Insofern unterliegen auch die C-P Anlagen permanenten
Anpassungsprozessen, sowohl im Hinblick auf die angewendeten Verfahren als auch
auf die Kontrollen. Darüber hinaus führen Veränderungen der rechtlichen Regelungen
zu Anpassungsprozessen der C-P Anlagen; i. a. zielen diese veränderten Regelungen
auf eine deutliche Emissionsminderung der C-P Anlagen ab. Die dadurch bedingten
Anpassungsprozesse beziehen sich deshalb auf alle Funktionsbereiche einer C-P- Anlage,
wie z. B. die Anlagentechnik, die eingesetzten Hilfsstoffe, die Ausstattung der Laboratorien
sowie die Sach- und Fachkunde des Personals.

I think I'd be tempted to use 'academic' here to contrast with the anwendungsbezogen-praxisorientiert. I think the term technical already covers the scientific side of things.
