Explanation:
A "gondola display" is a shelving unit that stands alone in a retail outlet. It does not need to be attached to a wall. Another name is "island display" shelving. I have used both terms in translations but have never been able to clearly determine if there is a difference is or which is used more often because both the term "island" and "gondola" have so many other uses in writing that Internet searches always yield pertinent and extraneous hits for both terms.

For sure though, wall shelving or wall display units are the opposite as shown at these and other sites:

The Lozier site just above uses both "island" and "gondola" but the shelving units look nearly identical.

I cannot prove this but after looking at hundreds of sites for shop fittings over the years, my feeling is:

1. An "island" unit is perhaps anything in a retail outlet that does not touch a wall. This would include an "island frozen foods display" unit and a "gondola display" unit.

2. A "gondola" unit is perhaps a sub-category of "island" units, which must have shelves. The waist-high "island frozen foods display" unit (that does not touch a wall but is shaped like a gigantic bathtub with dividers in it) would then probably not be a "gondola" unit.

3. It may then even be amateurish and redundant to use the phrase "gondola shelving" unit.
