German term

Hochstift

German to English Social Sciences Religion
actually German to English. I have found a translation, "bishopric," but I am not completely at ease with it. If it is correct, I would appreciate confirmation. If not, any suggestions would be welcome.

Can we have more context? A sentence? A paragraph?

There is a resemblance to the status of the Bishop of Durham in England who ruled as a Prince Bishop. To access this link, please attach (Anglican)after:

Two more options expressing the ‘political’ aspect (as touched on in JM’s ‘neutral’ comment below)

prince-bishopric:

Prince-bishoprics were most common in the feudally fragmentarised Holy Roman Empire
Fürstbischof zu Ermland (in German; a Hochstift since 1243
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince-Bishop

ecclesiastical principality:

A Hochstift was a former ecclesiastical principality of a bishopric.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Jonathan MacKerron : isn't this more of a political context than a religious one??

Yes, Jonathan. This is my reading of the de.wikipedia writeup (first link).

diocese

Here's another possibility:

Endre Both: Hochstift, das (früher): (Erz)bistum, Zentralverwaltung eines (Erz)bistums

archbishopric

according to Flügler's 1893 dictionary.
Webster for archbishopric:
1 : the jurisdiction or office of an archbishop
2 : the see or province over which an archbishop exercises authority

but according to the 1920 Muret-Sanders also "(grand) Chapter (of a cathedral) Hochstiftkirche=cathedral" so we really do need more context to make any educated guess here!!

Extra info added by the asker

I'm just adding the extra info the asker was unable to add in the Add the Note box because it exceeds the number of allowable words.

I thank those who have responded and apologize for not submitting a clearer context originally. Since I do not know how to add something to my original question, I am starting all over with the sentence:
"der Jesuit Christoph Brouwer schuf mit seinen antiquarischen Werken zur Geschichte der Hochstifte Fulda und Trier die Muster einer modernen kirchlich-klösterlichen Altertumskunde." Many thanks

bishopric

See also shogi.proz.com/kudoz/178957

(Link 1)
