Elster und Geitel (zwei Naturwissenschafter) stellten fest, daß die Leitfähigkeit der Luft in geschlossenen Gefäßen nicht abnahm, sondern größer wurde. Sie vermuteten, daß Kontaminationen der Luft ihrer Laboratorien durch Thoriumspuren daran Schuld waren, als deren Ursprung sie die thoriumhaltigen Gasglühkörper verdächtigten.
