agree  Erik Macki: An excellent translation. You could also use "allegedly" to deal with the subjunctive, e.g. that they had allegedly tried to implicate members of the hustler scene, etc. Depends on what works stylistically best for you.

neutral  Erik Macki: "Stricher" is more specific and a bit more colloquial than "street prostitute/tion"; in English it's normally a red-light district (but this, while in the same semantic region, means something quite different from "Stricher").
