German term

Musiklayout

German to English Other Music Music production
This term comes up a few times. The context is creating music for an advertising campaign. The "Layout" here refers to a version of the music, presumably using software, where it is still in development and the different versions are being evaluated. I suspect it is a false friend in this context. My current thinking is that it means "arrangement" but would love confirmation.

"weitere Verfeinung der beiden Musiklayouts" (there are two versions with different beats per minute)

"die technische Qualität des Layouts (wurde) verbessert und eine professionelle Stimme sowie musikalische Elemente in der Begleitung ergänzt"

Discussion

beermatt Oct 21, 2015:
erm... some other ProZ will crucify me for this, but if it's not a major issue, then just go with "music layout" and stop bothering yourself with finding a "music business" - compatible term...
Roger Matthews (asker) Oct 21, 2015:
Simple question It's through a translation agency, so no direct contact with the client - and the document is about something entirely different, this is a side issue
beermatt Oct 21, 2015:
Simple question: what kind of customer are you translating this stuff for?
beermatt Oct 21, 2015:
and never forget: the German music business is all too eager to instrumentalise wrongly understood English terms and expressions in their own unique manner.
Roger Matthews (asker) Oct 21, 2015:
Good point I agree, but I can't find any search engine hits for that word combination (just lots of advice on how to organise the layout of a music studio!). That's why I was hoping someone with knowledge of the music industry might appear here... my musical knowledge pretty extensive but paper-based and mostly pre 20th Century!
beermatt Oct 21, 2015:
never distrust your good false friends... sounds to me that "music layout" or "musical layout" might be ok in this context.
I'm not completely sure though - I'm not involved in that particular business, and that may well be the deciding thing about vocabulary. Music business is very individual about vocab!

mockup

It's not entirely clear from the context, but these probably are mockups. This is music produced with (software) samplers and other digital instruments, so different versions can be evaluated before producing the final version (with real musicians and/or more production effort).

I can safely rule out "arrangement".

I've found the term "MIDI mockup", although today, MIDI doesn't really play a significant role anymore.

Note from asker:
Thank you - particularly for ruling out arrangement. Mockup is the kind of thing I was looking for initially, and fits the context... will do some research to check

Thanks - as it wasn't a printed version, I was wary of this, and the client went for something else.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Erik Freitag : I'm not sure whether your suggestion will work here, but at least your references are from a completely different context (i.e. music engraving).

agree philgoddard : I think we have to assume the writer knows what the English word means. Software (if that's what it is) uses lots of English.

Track

You often see the term track used in music production software to refer to anything from a work in progress (different versions, etc.) to the finished piece. If you take a look, for example, at Apple's Logic Pro X, you can see it used in many different contexts.
Note from asker:
This sounds like a good solution, however the client went for a different one in this case. Thank you!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Erik Freitag : Yes, that's of course more generic than the source term, but it might work well here.

agree Kristina Cosumano (X) : Most correct or not, I can't say. But that's the term I have most often heard in the context of editing recorded music. .
