We have examined the MG34 before in AFV INTERIORS, but it is such an interesting machine gun design that it bears additional scrutiny, especially as it pertains to the Sd.Kfz.250 halftracks. The MG34 was considered a general purpose machine gun, taking the role of both a medium and heavy weapon, the difference being simply the mount and sights that were used. Heavy mounts, like the MG-Lafette 34, provided enough stability that the MG could be fired long distances for extended periods with minimum fatigue from the three-man crew. When used as a medium MG, the attached bipod or a light tripod could be used, but crew fatigue occurred quicker. We'll take a closer look at the MG and its various mounts in a few moments.
