German term

Halsschienengriff

I only have the term in a list of potential measures to take, but the above is the description of the Samariter of how it is performed. Any ideas?

Anne Thanks very much for this explanation! I do really appreciate it. You live and learn :)
Anne Schulz Dec 1, 2020:
jaw-thrust maneuver A formal term is "(modifizierter) Esmarch-Handgriff", but most people would probably just speak of "Unterkiefer vorschieben". The original Esmarch-Handgriff (as it was taught when I was in med school) involved both tilting the head and pushing on the jaw and opening the mouth. Some people therefore refer to a "modified Esmarch" for the maneuver without head tilt which is preferred today (or, rather, on the verge of loosing the preferred status again ;-) All structures in the neck are interconnected by fascia, and therefore a lower jaw movement also spreads to the cervical spine. (You can feel it a lttle if you put your fingers on the back of your upper cervical spine and move your jaw backwards and forwards.) If worst come to worst, an energetic external push on the lower jaw of an unconscious person (= no protective muscle tone to limit movements) with cervical spinal injury (= loss of structural stability) may therefore bear the risk of moving spinal fragments. This risk may be outweighed by the risk of suffocation, so you may have to do the maneuver - but if you don't have to do it, don't do it (and don't do it for splinting/immobilising the cervical spine ;-)

Griff -maneuver It would be very useful to know what would be the translation of 'jaw-thrust maneuver' into German and why this is dangerous in case of cervical injury. However, the question here does not say that there is actually an injury but the suspicion of an injury: Verdacht auf.

spinal head hold

Not very many occurrences on the web, but the description is identical:

Spinal head hold
This is an instant temporary 'splint' for the victim's neck when a spinal injury is suspected. Hold the victim's head with both your forearms with your thumbs 'locked' over their collar bones, keeping the head, neck and spine completely still and in line.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Stuart and Aida Nelson : but there is no actual 'splint' involved, is it? It is a 'Griff' what is normally described in English as maneuver. I can see the 'splint' is figurative here. It would be good to know why the 'maneuver' is dangerous? See discussion.

The forearm(s) act as a splint, as far as I understand the description (yet, this is only "book" or rather "web smartness", I have never used this myself)

jaw-thrust maneuver

The jaw-thrust maneuver is a first aid and medical procedure used to prevent the tongue from obstructing the upper airways. This maneuver and the head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver are two of the main tools of basic airway management, and they are often used in conjunction with other basic airway techniques including bag-valve-mask ventilation. The jaw-thrust maneuver is often used on patients with cervical neck problems or suspected cervical spine injury.[1]

The maneuver is used on a supine patient. It is performed by placing the index and middle fingers to physically push the posterior aspects of the lower jaw upwards while their thumbs push down on the chin to open the mouth. When the mandible is displaced forward, it pulls the tongue forward and prevents it from obstructing the entrance to the trachea

What to Do for a Suspected C-Spine Injury

If you’re trained in rescue breathing, use the jaw-thrust maneuver rather than the head-tilt chin-lift maneuver to keep the neck in a neutral position.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Anne Schulz : Sorry, but jaw thrust maneuver is different and may be life threatening, rather than life saving, when the cervical spine is injured :-((

No worries, I have found it as the equivalent because there is no other description in English for 'Griff'. In addition, if you look at my references it is what is recommended when there is a suspected / mit Verdacht auf cervical spine injury.

cervical collar hold

Looks like cervical collar would be the permanent device used for this purpose. So adding the word "hold" to the end would denote a temporary manual solution.

cervical hold could also work, but not neck hold.
