German term or phrase: Altzeitgedächtnis
Swiss document. Found in a summary of a person's medical condition. The patient has had an epileptic seizure and can't completely remember the past day's course of events.

Explanation:

"Altzeitgedächtnis" = "Altgedächtnis"

Definition GE: Gedächtnis für lange Zeit zurückliegende Erfahrungen und Bewusstseinsinhalte, die oft noch reproduziert werden können, wenn das Neugedächtnis bereits erheblich gestört ist.
Englisch: remote memory

Definition EN:
remote memory
Memory for events of long ago as opposed to recent events.

e.g.:
Remote memory for public and personal events was evaluated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), using a series of recall and recognition tests. Information related to content and date of past events was assessed separately.

We found that persistent, gene-specific cortical hypermethylation was induced in rats by a single, hippocampus-dependent associative learning experience and pharmacologic inhibition of methylation 1 month after learning disrupted remote memory. We propose that the adult brain utilizes DNA methylation to preserve long-lasting memories.

memory of past events [or: recall memory]

Explanation:
Memory assessment

The Kilifi Creek Behavioural Memory Test for Children (KCBMT), an everyday memory battery adapted from the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT-C) [23] was administered. It was developed to examine everyday memory i.e. memory needed to lead everyday life independently. It is composed of sub-tests of recall (memory of past events), recognition (memory of past events given clues) and prospective memory (remembering to carry out some action in the future).

in psychology, the act of retrieving information or events from the past while lacking a specific cue to help in retrieving the information. A person employs recall, for example, when reminiscing about a vacation or reciting a poem after hearing its title. Most students would rather take a multiple-choice test, which utilizes recognition memory, than an essay test, which employs recall memory. Retrieval of information is much more likely if individuals are tested in the same physical context in which the event they are trying to recall occurred. If, for example, the physical context at the time of learning differs markedly from the physical setting at the time of an exam, retrieval will be more difficult. Tests of recall have long been a primary method used by experimental psychologists in the study of human memory processes.

neutral  Rosa Paredes: It does not sound right and redundant; 'memory' refers to the past ....

-> On a lighter note: it's just as redundant as the source term: 'Gedächtnis' refers to the 'Altzeit' ;-) . On a more serious note: Please read my references above. They talk of recall memory, recognition memory and prospective memory.

agree  Armorel Young: yes, things stay in short-term memory only very briefly, not for 24 hours

Reference: short-term versus long-term memory

Reference information:
Not all researchers agree that short-term and long-term memory are separate systems. Some theorists propose that memory is unitary over all time scales, from milliseconds to years[4]. Support for the unitary memory hypothesis comes from the fact that it has been difficult to demarcate a clear boundary between short-term and long-term memory. For instance, Tarnow shows that the recall probability vs. latency curve is a straight line from 6 to 600 seconds (ten minutes), with the probability of failure to recall only saturating after 600 seconds [5]. If there were really two different memory stores operating in this time frame, one could expect a discontinuity in this curve. Other research has shown that the detailed pattern of recall errors looks remarkably similar for recall of a list immediately after learning (presumably from short-term memory) and recall after 24 hours (necessarily from long-term memory).[6]
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short-term_memory -

Long-term memory (LTM) is memory that can last as little as a few days or as long as decades. It differs structurally and functionally from working memory or short-term memory, which ostensibly stores items for only around 18 seconds (Peterson and Peterson, 1959). Biologically, short-term memory is a temporary potentiation of neural connections that can become long-term memory through the process of rehearsal and meaningful association. Much is not known about the underlying biological mechanisms of long-term memory, but the process of long-term potentiation, which involves a physical change in the structure of neurons, has been proposed as the mechanism by which short-term memories move into long-term storage. The time scale involved at each level of memory processing remains under investigation. As long-term memory is subject to fading in the natural forgetting process, several recalls/retrievals of memory may be needed for long-term memories to last for years, dependent also on the depth of processing. Individual retrievals can take place in increasing intervals in accordance with the principle of spaced repetition. This can happen quite naturally through reflection or deliberate recall (also known as recapitulation), often dependent on the perceived importance of the material.

neutral  Cetacea: Actually, "Neuzeitgedächtnis" (recent memory) and "Altzeitgedächtnis" (remote memory) are both part of "Langzeitgedächtnis" (long-term memory), i.e. Langzeit- and Altzeitgedächtnis are not synonyms.
