German term or phrase: die abzubildende Form

Re. the Automated Fiber Placement technique. I'm unsure about the entire final clause of the sentence. My draft translation:

"... laid in a compact preform that is then placed directly on the mold of the required shape."

mold of the required shape
Explanation:
Your interpretation of the last bit sounds right to me, i.e. the mold is of the shape that the finished part is to have.

My only query is what you mean about the Vorformling. As I understand it, the "semi-finished products" (Halbzeuge) constitute the compact preform, i.e. are laid down *as* a preform rather than *in* a preform. The way you have put it sounds like the Halbzeuge and the Vorformling are two different things.

I agree with your current version, but also agree that "compact" and "großflächig" sound a little contradictory!

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks! So would you agree with this: "... are placed as a compact preform directly on the mold of the required shape." I'm puzzled by how/why "compact" comes into it though, as the moulds are often anything but compact, as the previous sentence says (this process is 'meist für großflächigen Strukturbauteile sinnvoll').
