escort
It's a pretty general term that covers most possibilities.

An escort can show things to a visitor as well as make sure they stay out of trouble. I guess that's what is meant here.

: yes, but the sex worker interpretation could add the wrong flavour.

I think the meaning would be pretty clear from the context though.

mentor
I'm in Australia and I'm quite sure we'd use the term 'mentor' in that type of 'Betreuer' situation.
Can't be wrong.

O.K. - you're in the U.S. so I'd say it's a U.S. specific term you're after. I've not come across a role that dedicates its time to accompanying visitors for reasons other than occupational/professional peer assistance. Here we'd use the services of one of our security guards, but that's not flattering for the visitor. How about a 'chaperone' or 'escort'? But beware - as 'escort' can be interpreted in the sex worker sense!

: why did you disagree with alan then?

I was missing the context of the person not being occupationally or professionally related.

Alan Johnson
: I don't think mentor fits./Yes I do disagree with mentor, which is why I agreed with David's 'escort'.

So, you don't "disagree" with 'mentor' then...

perhaps... Facilitator sounds a bit euphemistically in this context

Stephen Sadie
: doesn't work, and "sounds ... euphamistically" is not english

Not just any escort (eg some blonde working the hotel bars) is the implication

: I had "minder" in mind but with your company modifier "guide" should work just fine.

Guide
As far as I can think off, there is no english word that means "exactly" Betreuer. "Betreuer" is someone that takes cares, gives orientation, shows around...
For me "Guide" comes the closest in this context. Caretaker or escort could work, too, although caretaker is used more in a medical or parental context...and escort could in fact be misinterpreted (I live in Bangkok)...
