salami tactics
An approach to achieve a goal in a series of small steps, assuming that noboby will notice/object to these small changes. Called pepperoni tactics on the other side of the pond (no, just kidding)

Comment: "Must admit to my shame that I don't recall ever having heard this in English before! Well, one lives and learns ...
Like Steffen's "piecemeal tactics" too, which is what I'm rather more familiar with. Shame I can't award any points to you, Steffen ... "

"softly, softly" tactics
Softly, softly, catchee monkey?
But Duden Oxford says: Salami·taktik die step-by-step policy

I thought that \"salami tactics \" was an Americanism, but the Daily Telegraph used it, so maybe Klaus\' answer isn\'t a load of boloney.

: The Telegraph quotes German minister Fischer saying this - the writer was, I think, more amused at this (to English ears) odd phrase

Right! (Will you be attending the PowWow in Duesseldorf? Don't forget Klaus - as salami slicer - will need a bit of notice ;-)

Switching to English ... the term\'s used in the sense that (presumably) the Deutsche Bahn used the fire as a welcome excuse to gradually (hence the Salami = slice by slice) abandon the line, and to set up a bus schedule instead.

: Good point! Du solltest aber lieber von "strengen" und nicht von "eingefleischten" Vegetariern reden - sonst ist alles eh Wurst :-)
