Discussion

Teresa Reinhardt Sep 13, 2006:
translating these is extremely difficult and requires knowledge of labor laws and conventions in source and target cultures

of his own volition

is the usual wording, meaning he hasn't been sacked.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ian M-H (X) : Definitely an option, if it needs to be spelled out, but I think Teresa's got a good point and we'd probably put this differently in English.

neutral yieto : This is obviously technically correct, but "volition" is fairly high register in English as to become stylistically distracting.

thanks - or own free will :-)
agree Steffen Walter : I've also seen "(up)on his/her own request".

disagree David Moore (X) : Sorry, NOT "ON" his..., but "of" his...please don't give us Indian quotes!

:-)
neutral Ian M-H (X) : There's nothing wrong with Indian quotes IMO, but I'd agree with David that "of" is far more usual than "on" in modern usage.

leave X - all the other versions allude to the fact that people might assume he's been pushed out; I wouldn't use them here
Peer comment(s):

agree Steffen Walter : An elegant way out, I'd say.

Thanks, Ian!
neutral David Moore (X) : How do you figure that? I think they are ALL subject to your reservation, don't you---honestly?

Having read and written more than I care to think about, and knowing labor law really well (and the hidden conventions of wording this stuff and letters of recommendation)//See also my remarks under "Ask Asker"

Thanks, Frosty!
agree yieto : I disagree with David: I think this is great. If you go with something closer to the original, it sounds clunky or euphemistic. This sounds natural and the meaning is clear ("he wasn't fired").

Thanks! not to mention, it might save you a lawsuit..
agree Sladjana Spaic : With yieto!

Thanks, Sladjana!
agree Ingeborg Gowans (X) : It seems to me that Teresa knows her "stuff"; it sounds natural and gets acrtoss the meaning very nicely..
