German term

zu einer Messe

German to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters auctions
Hello there,
Sorry if this is a bit obvious but I am translating something about a picture which is sold off at auction and I am being a bit dense about this phrase. Here is the context:
"Die Bilder wurden zu einer Messe in den Vereinigten Staaten ausgefuehrt"
The text is about whether VAT should be charged because the picture has been exported outside the EU but I cannot undestand why it would be exported "zu einer Messe". The picture has been exported at a trade fair??? It cannot be, can it? Don't you exhibit valuable pictures in galleries and not at trade fairs?
Proposed translations (English)
1 +1 to an auction
4 to an exhibition

Don't beat yourself up, Charles, we all walk into a tree while looking for the forest once in a while. Art fair would be my choice, so 'fair' might be a nice generic term.
Charles Stanford (asker) Aug 29, 2008:
Thank you for your feedback. Just one of the pictures went to the Messe (I just changed it from Eines der beiden Bilder to save time) and the reason why I posted the query was that in my ignorance it did not cross my mind that it could be anything other than a trade fair. I just could not see a valuable picture being sold off at a Messe - I thought it would have to be at auction or in a gallery. Of course it must be a Kunstmesse - dopey old me
Armorel Young Aug 29, 2008:
I'm also a bit confused because you talk of "a picture" but the text refers to "die Bilder" - presumably there are in fact plural pictures?
Armorel Young Aug 29, 2008:
Not quite sure I see the problem - there are all sorts of fairs: antique fairs, art fairs and so on. Seems fairly plausible that the pictures have been sent to some sort of fair in the hope of finding a buyer.
Lingua.Franca Aug 29, 2008:
Never mind. Unless you have some reference to a church, this is probably just an art fair (Kunstmesse), as per mill's reference below.
Lingua.Franca Aug 29, 2008:
Is it possible that die Messe is a mass (in church) instead of a trade fair? Do you have any more context?

to an auction

Maybe it's some kind of a "Versteigerungsmesse" (art fair with auctions) rather than just a "Messe" (trade fair). If possible translate it as "auction".

thank you so much
Thanks for your help Elitsa
Peer comment(s):

agree YorickJenkins : or "to be auctioned" -that would make the translation looser, but a little less fixed on the word "auction"

to an exhibition

Messe is another term for '(art) fair' (Americanisation), which in England would be an art exhibition.
