turned on, switched on Explanation: This seems to be a recent coinage from 'auf' = 'on' (opposite of 'zu') and 'steuern' = 'control' (or 'exercise control on'). In this context it's simply being used as a synonym for 'activate'. Note that in US English 'turn on' is very often used to describe activation of a transistor, diode, or circuit (and technoGerman draws heavily on US English these days).
