German term

konstellativ

German to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy From an academic journal article in Germany
This is the sentence:

Schließlich kann Vulnerabilität als Verweis auf Möglichkeitsräume insofern begriffen werden, als sie von einem subjektiven Vermögen her oder im Rahmen konstellativer bzw. umweltbedingter Verletzungen untersucht werden kann.

I am also unsure about 'von einem subjektiven Vermögen her'. Thanks for any help!

Discussion

Björn Vrooman Dec 17, 2019:
German translation (sort of) Überdies sei anzubringen, dass in gewisser Weise Möglichkeiten geschaffen werden, diese Verletzlichkeit unter individualpsychologischen Gesichtspunkten oder im Zshg. mit gruppen- bzw. umweltbedingten Traumata zu untersuchen.

"Her" sounds awful to me because it seems rather colloquial; herrührend would have been better. Möglichkeitsräume = Summe aller Möglichkeiten. Kollektiv and Umwelt are both sociological terms.

"Als" seems to put some limitations on the second statement; cf "insofern" (item 5): https://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/als_in_Vergleichen

You are both right that we need at least one or two more sentences; the above may not be entirely correct.

Best wishes

LinguaScribe We really do need our input on this. Is the article about marginalized children? Teachers' approach to vulnerable pupils/students? Would love to help you untangle this knot.
Ramey Rieger (X) Dec 17, 2019:
No, Phil, we don't and yes, abuse would be far too explicit for an academic. Harm, discomfort, etc. But abuse is what is inferred.
philgoddard Dec 17, 2019:
Yes, that's a possibility, as in Familienkonstellation, though I think "abuse" is going a bit far for "Verletzung". But we still don't know if this is even about children.
Ramey Rieger (X) Dec 17, 2019:
Beautifully dodgy! Here's one possible interpretation:
Ultimately, (a child's?) vulnerability can refer to several possibile areas of investigation, including (the child's) inherent nature, familial abuse or detrimental environmental influences.
philgoddard Dec 17, 2019:
You've classified this under education - does that mean it's about children?
I have no idea what this sentence means - I wonder if even the author does - but do you think "multifactorial" might work?

this is really abstrusely constructed

and maybe "environmental" for the next bit

it's one of these typically obscurely worded academic efforts that calls a spade a digging implement

thank God I didn't go into academia

"von einem subjektiven Vermögen" could be in the sense of "of their own making"

work round that idea maybe...

the author wants to put his/her ideas in an academically acceptable register and ok
