What happened here? In American, "practitioner" means someone certified to practice medicine.

It depends on what you need the Berufsbezeichnung for. For example, in a job reference or CV, where the *role* is required, I would write "preschool teacher."

BTW I did not "attend" an American preschool, but I've worked in one.

I think if you're going to use "early years", "early years educator" would be better than "teacher", as this is what the qualification, at least, is called.
