Just talking about Google results - @Marcus, pls. allow this special exception to show the problems with Googlebattle! :-))

http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&as_qdr=all&q="wash syndets...

http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&as_qdr=all&q="cleansing sy...

http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&as_qdr=all&q="cleaning syn...

These are searches in the whole WWW, no limits. IMO not such a convincing result.

OK, syndets is a sort of acronym for "synthetical detergents", but you may also omit the synthetic IMO. I also compared both terms at the FDA homepage. Just go there and enter each term in the search box --> www.fda.gov

I have to add that searching for the singular forms (see searches above) gives you more documents, but not that many as with the term detergent.

I chose this variant over wash syndet as - in a Google battle (http://www.googlebattle.com) - it receives more hits: 14,000 as opposed to 11,000.
