Fleischbrät

Fleischbrät

It is a component of the German "Fleischsalat"

Salat aus feinem Fleischbrät verfeinert mit Gurken in Mayonnaise

I have seen "Brät" translated as sausage meat and Fleischbrät as "meat emulsion". I am not too sure about either variant.

Any help appreciated!

Lori Dendy-Molz Mar 11, 2005:
I failed to notice you were the same victim as in the Fleischkse imbroglio! Good luck with this one as well! ;-)
Non-ProZ.com Mar 11, 2005:
Hi idwerk- I seem to be cursed with weird forms of meat all the time and I can't just write "pressed crap"!!
Non-ProZ.com Mar 11, 2005:
Hi idwerk - I agree with you. I am sure that Fleischbrt is not the same as Fleischkse or spam . And a message to Fehlhammer .... It is often called Fleischsalat up here (in the good old North anyway). My husband eats the stuff and it says Fleischsalat right on the package. I think Wurstsalat comes in a non-mayonnaise-based dressing (vinegar and oil) whereas Fleischsalat is in mayonnaise. I know what it looks like - but it still remains a mystery meat for me!!! What Klaus has written makes sense to me.
Lori Dendy-Molz Mar 11, 2005:
Ah, yet another entertaining discussion of German mystery meat! See http://www.proz.com/kudoz/950568 for more enlightenment/confusion. Methinks Fleishbrt is not the same as Fleischkse or spam, though.

agree JeffFish (X) : This is the best one. Totally non-commital and ambiguous as to exactly what composes the "meat" (enough to make you go vegetarian)

thanks - you could eat it with a bit of mustard ;-))
agree Craig Meulen : The strips of meat I ate in some Fleischsalat the other day reminded me of luncheon meat, and this salad matches the description above!!

agree Francis Lee (X) : IMO the only solution; sausages lassen sich eben nicht direkt übersetzen (when will they learn?), aber das hier wär schon passend // that pic 's from Sausalito side, right?

thanks [ ] I don't get the comment about the pic from the Sausalito side; if you are referring to my pic I snapped it myself and it's the 25/4/ bridge in Lisbon

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks. I went with this one because I thought it was best for a menu. Most people understand what luncheon meat is- even if they cannot define what is in it. Thank you Hermann and thank you Klaus too for your explanation. (below). It was almost a tie between sausage meat and luncheon meat!"

<<Meatloaf>>

Fleischbraet is known in other areas as Fleischkaese and the prime constituent of meat salad. It is a baked loaf of ground meat and then often sold sliced (hot) in a fresh roll. (I am getting hungry). Finely sliced when cold with mayo, gherkin,onion...
Peer comment(s):

disagree JeffFish (X) : Fleischkäse is not ground meat, it's pureed. And it isn't sliced into the salad, it's diced. // ADD: Anglo meatloaf is always ground beef. Good reason to use Pons for your general dictionary. Oxford is dead wrong
8 Min.
that is a regional difference, Sued Baden=sliced!
disagree Barbara Harder-Lutz : meatloaf is "Hackbraten" and made of ground beef (Hackfleisch)
9 Min.
refer toOxford dictionary: Fleishkaese = Meat loaf
neutral Francis Lee (X) : meatloaf = falsche Hase = include in a salad at your own risk

bologna sausage

The "Salat" should be called "WURSTsalat", though. "Fleischsalat" is not made with "Fleischbrät," but rather cold roast, for example.

Fleischbrät is very similar to bologna sausage (but I don't know whether it's actually the same thing).

HTH,

Peer comment(s):

neutral Barbara Harder-Lutz : real Fleischsalat should be with Fleischwurst, however Fleischbraet is not real Fleischwurst

spam

spam is the official american name for this weird meat out of the can that nobody can really identify anymore...no, it is not "corned beef"! it is indeed almost the same as Fleischbraet (which also is not a real piece of meat anymore but pressed meat - contents from who-knows-where in a can...

and it is not pressed ham either
Peer comment(s):

neutral Klaus Herrmann : Die Antwort sollte zum Formvorderschinken, oder? // yeah, but as you say, it's pressed meat, and it's too coarse to compare to Fleischbrät, IMHO
3 Min.
no, Formvorderschinken ist nicht spam, das ist wieder etwas anderes
agree Norbert Hermann : is the closest and has nothing to do with ham - ask the war generation - though it's coming back into fashion.

disagree Francis Lee (X) : sorry - woher dieser 5-Sterne-Rating? "official american"? nöh

sausage meat

Obviously, a definition of the German term Fleischbrät is required to begin with:

3. Was ist Fleischbrät?

So, technically speaking, yes, if you'd be writing an article for a food processing magazine, meat emulsion would be a correct term:
A finely chopped meat mixture is conventionally referred to as a "meat emulsion. (2)

For a menu, I think sausage meat is just fine, unless it's regulated term as Fleischbrät is in German.

Peer comment(s):

agree JeffFish (X) : yes, perhaps "fine sausage meat". In reality snouts and lips - bon appetit!
15 Min.
No baloney...
neutral Norbert Hermann : Servus Klaus :-) sausage meat is usually sold raw - used for stuffing, pies, etc. I would stay well clear from this salad if it had sausage meat in it;-)
35 Min.
Hallo Norbert; not necessarily, sausage meat can be had cooked/cured as well, cf. http://www.answers.com/topic/sausage (and I'll have fish today, I guess :))
agree Edith Kelly : Absolutely, in CEN standars, it's always called sausage meat.

Fleischbrät is the uncooked meat mass that Fleischwurst is made of. The way I see it, the source text is not quite right. It should actually read:
Salat aus feinem Fleischwurst verfeinert mit Gurken in Mayonnaise

A Fleischsalat made of uncooked meat mass sounds even worse than mystery meat!
