routine, run-of-the-mill performances Explanation: or: contrived acting (performing)/performances I also believe that it refers to unnatural, contrived or overdone acting/performing, often what one could expect from provincial (run-of-the-mill) theater performances. Hofmannsthal was looking for high quality theater of the best kind, dramatic, with natural acting, and elaborate productions/stagings. The Salzburg Festival site sees it as such as well. http://www.salzburgfestival.at/programmatik.php?lang=en http://www.salzburg-proam.com/2007/en/festspiele.php Conductors, stage-directors, orchestras, singers, actors and virtuoso instrumentalists of world renown can be seen and heard in July and August in the town on the river Salzach. Even the most eminent opera stars come together here to rehearse productions intensively for several weeks, thereby fulfilling the creed of the Salzburg Festival as it was originally envisioned by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, one of the Festival's founding fathers: "Dramatic play-acting in the strongest sense is our intention; routine, run-of-the-mill performances have no place here." http://www.bayerisches.staatsballett.de/data/forum/thread.ph... Hier gibt es kein Rampentheater, kein Augenrollen, kein Zähnefletschen, sondern natürliche, fließende Bewegungen. http://www.pantheater.com/ClassPages/ClassesandWorkshops.htm Meisner technique helps move beyond contrived acting to truthful in the moment actions. http://www.cummingsstudyguides.net/xActing.html Anything overdone strays far from the purpose of acting, which is primarily to hold a mirror up to life to reflect virtue, contempt, and the spirit of the times. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 22 hrs (2007-06-26 04:00:06 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- thanks to Diana for her input. I would say, in addition to my main suggestion (routine, run-of-the- mill performances): Stand-and-speak/sing theater (forestage theater) unimaginative, uninspiring performance(s) conventional theater static performances/acting performances without dramatic involvement (lack-luster performances) siehe Link oben: "Schlimm ist auch, dass Carsen die Sänger völlig im Regen stehen lässt - Rampentheater vom Feinsten also" - die “stehen” und sprechen/singen also bloß ihre Rollen und reagieren nicht wirklich aufeinander/agieren miteinander. Keine Hilfe von der Regie. Indeed, one could literally call it stand-and-speak theater or (stand and speak on the) forestage/apron* theater (im Deutschen wird sowohl Steh- und Rampentheater wie auch Steh- und Singtheater gebraucht). · *apron theater is however a term used for performances for children on the apron stage. Rampentheater: No real (“inter”)acting, just standing and speaking/singing off their parts, possibly either totally flat/dry or in an exaggerated, contrived manner. There are many ways to describe such a performance – (dry, boring) unimaginative, uninspiring performance(s) one-dimensional, flat (lame), dull, exaggerated, contrived, unnatural, stiff acting, overly expressive/unexpressive performances – but what the plays all have in common is that there is a lack of natural acting and interaction between the actors on the theater stage, a lack of intelligent choreography and a lack of (dramatic) movement, and thus, it all becomes very boring, dull, or annoying. The members of the audience would possibly scream "take the blinders off, "stop reciting, start acting," "reciting is not acting," "don’t just stand there," "provincial theater," or "stiff acting," "sh.. up" if they're watching such a bad performance, and in German, they sometimes actually scream: “Rampentheater.” http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0767430077/student_vie... apron The part of the stage located in front of the proscenium; the forwardmost portion of the stage. The apron was used extensively in the English Restoration period, from whence the term comes. Today, it is usually called the forestage. http://www.playbillarts.com/features/article/5625.html JL: Absolutely. It's like the issue of stand-and-sing versus dramatic involvement. http://www.eoneill.com/library/newsletter/v_2/v-2f.htm Yes, Welded has the O'Neill passion, but it cannot be made to flow if the actors simply stand and speak the lines. ... Static theater/static performances: http://www.bayerische.staatsoper.de/data/forum/thread.php3?i...
