German term

Chinaalkaloiden

German to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
Google hits give "China alkaloids" as a translation, but I have my doubts.
Anyone?

I'd be more inclined to think along the lines of 'cinchona alkaloids'...but I am not a chemist :):)

Thanks for your input!

@ lirka: classification Yorkshireman has just opened up a can of worms, so to speak :-) The chemistry of natural products and in particular that of the alkaloids is rather complex. Initially they were classified on the basis of their plant origins (taxonomic classif.). Once IUPAC nomenclature was developed, the chemical structure became the basis. I need some more info on the kind and date of the text in order to come up with the best translation. "Chinaalkaloide" sounds very much like early 20th century in which case the plant origin (cinchona) applies.
Coqueiro Jan 17, 2014:
Chinolin/Quinoline maybe?

agree rainerc (X) : see my discussion entry. // The additional references confirm that the taxonomic classification is best in this case.

Quinine alkaloids

Has nothing to do with China, the name is a corruption of Quina.

Alkaloids extracted from the bark of the South American Cinchona or Quina tree. In 1860, the British smuggled plants and seeds from South America and cultivated them in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and various tea-growing areas of the Raj (India), the best known being Darjeeling. This became invaluable for combating malaria in the British colonies.

Quinine also known as Jesuit's Bark or Peruvian Bark and, as Dr J. already mentioned in her answer, the alkaloids extracted or synthesised are also collectively known as cinchona alkaloids.
Peer comment(s):

disagree rainerc (X) : see discussion. // The quinine alkaloids are one of many in the cinchona bark.

China-Alkaloide

China-Alkaloide: Cinchona-Alkaloide; über 30 in Cinchona-Arten vorkommende Chinolinalkaloide, z.B. Chinin, Chinidin, Cinchonidin, Cinchonin.
