I'm not a metallurgist - my Dad was - so I can't guarantee this is the correct solution in this context.
The reduction of aluminium oxide is carried out by fused salt electrolysis. The electrolytic cell consists of a graphite vessel (cathode) into which graphite blocks (anode) project from above. Metallic aluminium (and slag as a waste product) are formed from the aluminium oxide due to the current flow (light arc) in the cell.

: This is what is "literally" specified here. This is, in fact, equivalent to the Hall-He'roult process. In fused salt electrolysis no cryolite would be added.
