German term or phrase: Kabarettist
Now I know that this is not a cabaret artist, but I am at a bit of a loss to get something equivalent. I only know Kabarettisten from what I watch on TV (very little) so I would probably lean towards 'political satirist'. But are they always political, and always satirical? I'd be grateful to hear other opinions.

I translated this term a while back and came to the conclusion that political satirist was the best translation - like you say, definitely not cabaret artist!!!

Explanation:
I can only refer to the "kabarettisten landscape" in Austria where the term Kabarettist need not refer to political satire alone, sometimes the Kabarettist's program only deals with his/her everyday life and experience without any political context... so you might want to use "stand-up comedian" or "political stand-up comedian"

disagree  Steven Sidore: The problem is, it also doesn't have to resemble anything like a stand-up routine either. In Germany, anyway (and I've seen Kabarett in Mainz, Cologne, and Berlin), it is almost always political, or at least topical...

agree  Norbert Hermann: stand-up comedian by itself is in my opionion the equivalent here - go to the festival in E'borough and you have them wall to wall - satirical/political and lots of other topics.

neutral  writeaway: in English a stand-up comedian fires off one liners and is just going for laughs. A (good) Kabarettist is being satirical and is often trying to convey a 'message'. A stand-up doesn't do the German term justice (imho)

I feel that a German Kabarettist is a fairly unique performer. It\'s hard to find an English term that really captures the type of delivery typical of a Kabarettist.

agree  NGK: I agree that there is no real equvalent in English. OTOH, if you have to explain it, you might as well translate it as Louise and GUSTL suggested.
