Does any know what "anxiété envahissante" would be in English? It produces 3,760 results in Google so it must be a set term in psychology.

Here's some possible translations I've come up with so far:
• “intrusive anxiety", which has 3,320 results in Google.
• "Invasive anxiety", which has 442 results.
• "Overwhelming anxiety", which has 196,000 results (so the most common term by far – however, I'm not sure it means that same thing as anxiété envahissante).

Here's the context:

Il s’agit d’une patiente qui est bien mise. Elle se présente sans ralentissement ou agitation psychomotrice, le propos est cohérent, structuré, organisé. L’affect est tout à fait neutre, mobilisable, elle est capable de sourire. Elle a démontré un excellent contrôle émotionnel sans anxiété envahissante, aucuns pleurs ou émotivité, aucune colère, irritabilité ou rage dans le contact.

@Drmanu Someone might suffer from "invasive anxiety" without it being so severe as to be "overwhelming". However, an absence of "invasive anxiety" doesn't necessarily mean "no anxiety".

I went with what the specialist told me She said overwhelmed (did not seem overwhelmed by anxiety) could work too. She is a doctor in the field, I guess she knows what she is talking about. Without invasive anxiety works too.

No "overwhelming anxiety" leaves room for anxiety and in this case there is no anxiety and a good control of emotions, so for me the term is clearly wrong.

@Lorraine "Overwhelming anxiety" is not at all the same thing as "invasive anxiety". This does require specialist terminology, not approximation.

Though the following definition is given it in physiological terms, I think it helps and can be translated into psychological terms:

" Invasive
…
able to spread from one tissue to another, or having the capacity to spread, as in the case of an infection or a malignant tumor."

So, in the psychological context "invasive" thoughts or emotions would be thoughts or emotions that spread from their proper or originating context to contexts where they are inappropriate and possibly harmful.

That doesn't follow from the fact that I used "intrudes" as part of my explanation that one can substitute "intrusive" for "invasive". I also used the word "dominates": same applies.

pervasive anxiety

Just dawned on me seeing this tonight that in psychology and psychiatry, "envahissant" is more often than not rendered by "pervasive". You will find 29K hits for "pervasive anxiety". You might think it worth checking out.

Note that the term "envahissant" is used descriptively in the body of texts of titles, not as a diagnostic term. Not to be confused with "troubles anxieux généralisés", (generalized axiety disorder), but do note that you will often find the term "envahissant" (pervasive) used in descriptions of this diagnostic term.

agree B D Finch : I'm very surprised at that, because there is a clear difference in English between "invasive" and "pervasive", but it seems "envahissant" covers both.
