French term

touts collectifs

French to English Art/Literary Philosophy
Philosophy text.

"Ni la praxis et ses touts collectifs ne peuvent saisir la cooperation. Au contraire, la cooperation de l'economie contribue a destruire cette relation."

"Collective wholes" is my translation so far. Any thoughts, other approaches? (apologies on a laptop without accents right now)

B D Finch Aug 12, 2014:
@Elizabeth Not very likely: "the philosophy of praxis" was the expression used by Gramsci in his Prison Notebooks as a code expression for Marxism because his books would have been confiscated had he used the word "Marxism". "Praxis" is, of course, an expression used in Marxist philosophy.
Elizabeth Tamblin Aug 12, 2014:
It's about the philosophy of praxis. In that context, it must mean the collective elements of that philosophy.
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 12, 2014:
Not a typo! It is not a typo, but the plural of the noun "tout", as written. The Larousse entry is in line with the asker's thinking : collective whole/ensembles. Maybe "ensembles" would work?
Melissa McMahon Aug 12, 2014:
@ Nikki I wondered that too, but it seems "touts collectifs"/"collective wholes" is a piece of terminology used in contrast to "touts distributifs"/"distributive wholes"
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 12, 2014:
Is this a typo? Could this be "atouts collectifs"?
Elizabeth Tamblin Aug 12, 2014:

Elizabeth Tamblin Aug 12, 2014:
I imagine it means 'all its essential elements / parts'.

Collective wholes sounds a good translation.

collective whole/aggregate/sum of its components

I wonder if "its aggregate" could work here as a concise alternative?

OR

Given the reference provided by BD Finch, I wonder if maybe a more interpretive solution like the following might do:

"Neither praxis nor the sum of its components"

It seems as though your text may be based upon this:

"Ni les théories socialistes, ni les théories libérales ne peuvent comprendre et organiser la co-création et la co-réalisation des subjectivités, sans les détruire, sans produire des effets anti-productifs. Ni la praxis et ses touts collectifs (tels la classe, la loi de la valeur, le travail) ni le paradigme libéral (avec son triptyque : liberté individuelle, marché et propriété), ne peuvent appréhender les conditions de constitution de la coopération entre cerveaux."

Before finding that, I had been about to post "collectivities" as an answer. However, that would not fit here. In fact it is difficult to see how class, the law of value, and labour can be validly described as "touts collectifs".
