The context is a description of how songs played by musicians in Mali were recorded during the 1950s. The first term I am having trouble with is "conducteur". The sentence goes like this:
Les musiciens étaient enregistrés à raison d’un cachet de 1.500 ou 2.500 francs CFA toutes les trois minutes...La durée de l’enregistrement était cochée sur un conducteur (3-4 mm). La régie fixe tout. Elle minute tout ce qui est à diffuser.
I want to be sure that I am understanding this to mean that something (tape, wire?) was marked every 3-4 mm to indicate how much time was left in the 3-minute recording time.
I have tried this as a translation:
The musicians did recordings for a fee of about 1,500 to 2,500 West African francs (CFA) for every three minutes […] The duration of the recording was marked off on a lead wire [?](3-4 mm).
I am having difficulty envisioning this set-up and how it could be possible that only 3-4 mm are marked off for 3 minutes.
Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure if this would really apply here, but a "conducteur" in music can also mean a (musical) score (as in "conducteur d'orchestre", a full orchestral score).
Another meaning, derived from this first meaning and which actually seems more likely in this context, would be that of a "cue sheet" , ie a document which details the timed outline of the recording session or broadcast (as in le "conducteur d'une émission de radio")

Since it's a studio recording, "track sheet" would probably work as well.
Are you sure that it's not a typo for mn ? 3/4 minutes being pretty standard for songs.
Unless we're talking about some really specific "punched card" device, I can't see how it would be possible to "cocher sur un conducteur" if the word refered to a cable or sensor.

: "Track sheet" sounds good in this context. Since there is mention of "diffuser", I wonder if this isn't radio? Regardless, it certainly sounds like the musicians were paid by tranche of 3 minutes, noted on a "planning" (in French) or a track sheet.

Je pencherais plutot pour "track sheet" (pour une piste) ou encore "session documentation sheet" "general recording map" (pour la session)
Je ne pense pas qu'il y avait un système de carte perforée dans les studios d'enregistrement maliens des années 1950, et cocher quelque chose sur un capteur de 4mm n'a pas vraiment de sens. La réference à la regie et au minutage m'évoque plutôt une feuille de route qu'un dispositif technique.
Vu l'époque la piste de magnétophone à fil / ruban d'acier suggérée par Tony est aussi interessante, mais le fil utilisé ressemble à du fil de pêche, donc pas 4mm, et le terme conducteur n'est pas utilisé dans ce contexte à ma connaissance. Il pourrait s'agir d'une bande magnétique de 4mm mais ce n'est pas standard et ne résout pas la question du la nature du conducteur.

Wire recorders have been used, but were pretty much obsolete by the 50s, I'd have thought — at any rate in Europe. Magnetic tape recording was still fairly new, and direct-to-disc could still have been used in some antiquated studios.
But I have no idea how 'conducteur' comes into this; some magnetic tape recording systems did use a section of conductive tape (or tinfoil!) to activate their 'end-of-tape' sensor — so this could have been a short piece of conductive tape spliced in advance into the recording tape, in order to make it stop automatically at a certain point and hence bring the recording to an end, willy-nilly; but frankly, I think that is absurdly far-fetched!
Regarding the 3–4 mm dimension, consider that this could for example have been the SIZE of the mark used, rather than the spacing; it does say a 'notch', so I think a 3–4 mm notch in a piece of recording tape, for example, could be plausible.
