French term

ennoyer

French to English Science Geology
geological term, roughly meaning buried or overlain

Discussion

Roddy Stegemann Oct 4, 2004:
Perhaps a direct email on the source would clear up your difficulty. Water does not appear to be the problem.
Julie Roy Oct 4, 2004:
Could we please have more context? Are you referring to lands/terrains or maybe rock formations that are under water?

of the land margin. Source

DEF – Invasion ou submersion d'un

waterlogged

Since there is little context offered, I decided to offer another possibility: "waterlogged"

waterlogged

DEF – In a condition such that the groundwater stands at a level that is detrimental to plant growth. Waterlogged land may result from excessive irrigation or seepage, coupled with inadequate drainage.

OBS – Saturated with water for a prolonged period of time.

plunge (beneath/below/under)

ennoyage n.m. - Disparition de couches visibles à l'affleurement sous d'autres formations, du fait de leur pendage. Terme utilisé in particulier dans les terminaisons périclinales des plis
[Dict. de géologie, Foucault & Raoult, Masson]

Plunge. A fold is said to plunge if the axis is not horizontal, the amount of plunge being the angle between the axis and the horizontal line lying in a common vertical plane
[Penguin Dict. of Geology]

(the angle at which a fold plunges is called the "pitch")

I suppose it would be possible for the plunging limb(s) of a fold to NOT be overlain by other materials, but to be exposed over a considerable distance. This would not constitute "ennoyage", so maybe you need to add "below/under formation X, other formations" etc.

<<The Cretaceous is here overlain by channelized Pleistocene pebbly outwash. Above this outwash is another reddish-brown till. Nearby to the SW, a buff-colored paleosol and a layer of loess overlie the upper till. The Cretaceous exposed here, formerly thought by most geologists to be nondisturbed and in situ, clearly is neither. As mentioned, it displays a recumbent fold (as outlined by cm-scale clay interbeds) with a sheared out lower limb. This fold plunges roughly 17° into S60°W; its axial surface is oriented N4°E, 20°NW. >>

1: plunge,pitch (structural geology) 2: bury (relief)

"ennoyage" in structural geology is the pitching or plunge of a fold axis (or pericline). It also refers to the burial of a relief feature.
"ennoiement" is generally used to refer to the burying of a geological structure (beneath younger formations), cf. buried topography.
