One for Tony M I think! (if you are there). Amazed this is not in the archives. GDT doesn't provide clarity either.
I had assumed "gate"... but in fact "grid of a transistor" appears a lot too. In this patent, for example, the two seem to be interchangeable: https://patents.google.com/patent/EP1463102A2/en (title vs contents...).
OTOH maybe there is a difference between "grid" and "gate"...

transistor gate
The patent you quote as ref. is in fact a translation from DE, which is more consistent in its terminology. FETs use a 'gate' as an analogy for the 'grid' of a vacuum tube / valve, but FR rather confusingly uses the same term for both, perhaps to avoid the alternative ambiguity with a 'logic gate'

Just to clarify: the terminology 'gate' (FR: 'grille') applies only to Field-Effect (and related types) of transistor, commonly referred to as FET.

Note from asker:
Thanks, much appreciated. "grid of transistor" gets a lot fewer hits than "gate of transistor", but nothing beats confirmation from l'homme du métier... |

: Not in this case: here, we are specifically talking about FETs

Should have gone with first instinct, i.e. gate and not checked on names of terminals.
