French term

l'aérien

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng port radar installation
NB This has nothing to do with air transport. The radar is installed in a port and targets sea vessels.
The contract is for replacing old radar equipment.
I've provisionally used "aerial part".

claude-andrew (asker) Aug 5, 2020:
Many thanks to all contributors. This one proved rather inconclusive, and so I'm closing without choosing an answer. I've had to deliver, and finally used "the aerial part", with aerial as an adjective of course, not a noun.
Daryo Aug 4, 2020:
@ AllegroTrans the devil is in the details.

You CAN find "array" used in connection with radars, but it doesn't mean automatically that the radar in this ST (mounted in/near a port and monitoring the maritime traffic near the port, 99% one with a rotating parabolic antenna") has ANYTHING to do with any kind of "array".

You could have un "array of radars" = SEVERAL radars that work together to cover far more than any of them individually could,

or you could have

ONE radar built as an "array" of interconnected repeated modules - here is one of the most unusual examples

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ae/DUGA_Rad...
The array at Chernobyl, viewed from a distance

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duga_radar

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over-the-horizon_radar

I can't se how any of these combinations of "array" + "radar" could apply to this ST.

Daryo Jul 31, 2020:
If you look at look how "l'aérien (de radar)" is used in various samples you can find on the Web, it would refer only to the rotating radar antenna.
Obviously, this rotating antenna can not stand and rotate in thin air, so au sense large "l'aérien" would also include everything between the ground and the antenna.
Tony M Jul 30, 2020:
@ Johannes "Supposing" isn't enough — specialist knowledge of the field is needed here, and it certainly isn't just the antenna!
Johannes Gleim Jul 30, 2020:
I suppose the 'aérien' is the radar antenna.

liz askew Jul 29, 2020:
Would "mount" be any good?
claude-andrew (asker) Jul 29, 2020:
@Tony Indeed it does include other equipment including remote interfaces. I thought of "above ground equipment" but elsewhere reference is made to cable ducts...
Suzie Withers Jul 29, 2020:
Superstructure? I wonder if superstructure could be used, although usually applied to ships, so could be misleading:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superstructure
Tony M Jul 29, 2020:
@ Asker In essence, it means all the equipment that is "up in the air" — which may include the actual antenna itself, but also various other bits of equipment that go with

French term (edited): l'aérien (d'une installation de radar)

(radar) superstructure

Superstructure
The superstructure is the portion of a building which is constructed above the ground level and it serves the purpose of structure’s intended use. It includes columns, beams, slab upwards including all finishes, door and window schedules, flooring, roofing, lintels, and parapets.

https://theconstructor.org/building/superstructure-substruct...

the only reservation (thus CL2) is that it could be interpreted as to include only the building, not all the equipment that goes in and on top (the radar antenna and all the accompanying electronics)

superstructure of the radar installation ?
Peer comment(s):

agree SafeTex : "radar aeriel structure" might solve your reservation but it gets very few hits. I read "aeriel" in it as being in the air, not the component itself

Thanks!
disagree AllegroTrans : Right idea, wrong term

CL2 so I'm not saying that it's THE term, but for sure it's closer to the mark than "array" which can't fit in this ST whichever way you try HERE it's ONLY ONE radar, not an "array of radars", nor a radar build as an "array" of repeated elements.

disagree Daryo : you started from a false friend: "l'aérien" in this ST is the part of the whole radar installation that is "up the air/above the ground", not a radio "aerial" // an "array" is made of several interconnected identical elements see RAID, array of telescopes

Apparently the aerial is radar antenna.
"Antenna is a conductor by which electro-magnetic waves are sent out or received, commonly of a wire or set of wires often attached to metal rods: aerial."
"Radar antenna is a device which radiates radio frequency energy in a radar system, concentrating the transmitted power in the direction of a target, and which provides a large area to collect the echo power of the returning wave."
One part is for sound and the other is about vision.

www.wikipedia.org/wiki/radar
"Radar is a detection system which uses radio waves to detect aircraft, ships etc in the vicinity. Its antenna are used for receiving and transmitting information collected using electromagnetic waves in its radio domain. A receiver and processor determines properties of objects detected while radio waves reflect the object from the transmitter."

The radar exists to perceive and detect, collect information by means of radio waves. By reflecting the object from a transmitter the radar can transmit information connected with whatever it perceives in its vicinity. (wikipedia.org/wiki/radar)
The information is not the sound or vision itself but the information connected to its existence.

disagree Tony M : This is a faux ami here: l'aérien is much more than JUST the antenna itself.... Specialist technical knowledge is crucial here.

disagree Daryo : an "aerial" is used for "ordinary" radio equipment, a radar has an "antenna" (strictly speaking two: a transmitting antenna + a receiving antenna) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar // there is NO SOUND whatsoever transmitted by a radar!!!
