French term

décentrement

French to English Social Sciences Anthropology NON-medical
My text:

Can anyone comment on the accuracy of my translation: "Here we are, in Godelier's words, putting in place a teaching approach that leads to intellectual and social decentralization"

text from Godelier below:

http://jda.revues.org/3774#text

I'd avoid decentralization as that word was a possible option in French and not chosen - probably as it immediately makes one think of decentralized administration. Does not mean the same thing either.

There is also a Google Books ref (unpostable URL on ProZ, as too long) to the influence of decentralization from social economics which probably made it a buzz word for Godelier in 1974.

Decentering: Decentering refers to the ability to consider multiple aspects of a situation. In Piaget's theory of cognitive development, the third stage is called Concrete Operational stage, where a child age 7-12 shows increased use of logic. One of the logical processes that develops is that of Decentering. For example, when asked to choose between two lollipops, a child might choose based on how one flavor is better than the other even though the other is the same size and color.
