Flemish term

krakkebaas

Flemish to English Other Slang promotional/catalogue
This appears in a catalogue of a Belgian manufacturer of paving slabs and bricks in a 'lifestyle' illustration, in the phrase 'Ik ben de grote krakkebaas' next to a picture of a boy (age around 5 or 6) sitting on a toy tractor, whose wheels have just tracked mud onto the patio.

It must be slang, and I'd like to know what it means.

TIA

Discussion

writeaway Dec 30, 2004:
you can edit your question and change the category etc. I thought it had to do with balcony railings.... seemed strange, but then again.... ;-)
Non-ProZ.com Dec 30, 2004:
BTW, this has nothing to do with balcony railings -- that's a leftover from my previous question (outsmarted by Proz forms again; it's almost as bad as Word!).
Non-ProZ.com Dec 30, 2004:
Yeah, I found the google hits for the musician. Maybe he's become a folk hero for six-year-old boys? The word's not capitalised in the text, and the sentence is written in imitation 'elementary school' handwriting (complete with a corrected spelling error), so all bets are open. It could be very obscure slang.
writeaway Dec 30, 2004:
Is "krakkebaas" in caps in your text? if it is, it's just the name of a person (singer?), not slang. if not, then the mystery remains. here's the url for the person: www.bobtjeblues.com/ pages%20groepen/paginas/big_bill.htm

If Big Bill does not mean anything for the English speaking target public, there might be another, similar person or singer that has the same connotation

Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : Since it turns out this has nothing to do with balcony railings and since this is the only way the word is mentioned on Google, could well be. but is more of a reference than a meaning. strange.

I do think they refer to this person, as I heard it like that in Louvain, when I lived and studied there - sorry for not mentioning this in my answer before
