Describing a dreamlike dress in tulle and lace.

The shoulder straps are very narrow, but I don't like saying 'spaghetti straps' in the context of haute couture: any alternatives?

It also has a 'trailing skirt' but my friend says there is a name for this kind of skirt, i.e. snug-fitted at the front and with a slight kind of 'bustle' or flare at the back. What's the jargon?

I don't know about fashion but my friend who is in the business says that "Flounce" may be close but it means a sort of ruffle,'swirl' does not flare, 'Fishtail' is like the mermaid and they also use the name 'sweet'.
Non-ProZ.com Sep 21, 2004:
I think it's 'shoestring straps' for the first one. So what about the second one? I am sure there is a word, my friend says it's like 'flounce' or 'whirl' or something like that.

I agree with shoestring straps

Fishtail skirt with coloured panels.
Velvet fishtail skirt with coloured front and back panels. The skirt is longer at the back, giving a slight trailing effect. It fastens with a zip at the side and has a sturdy waistband.

Fishtail Train – Beautifully fitted around the hips with a nice flair from the knee to the hemline
Peer comment(s):

neutral Deborah Workman : This is a skirt that is tightly fitted to the knees and trails below, also called a mermaid dress (great in those 30s/40s movies!), but it has no bustle (fullness above the knees and at the back).

well, the meaning in this case is flaring to give volume. It says "kind of bustle" I do not think it will be referring to the proper ones, as used in XIX century fashion

"spaghetti straps" and "slim/sheath/cone skirt with drape effect/feature"

This is a revised answer because I tangled my revisions after Mapi's good feedback about "bouffant" skirts (which is that they are full all around).

Haut couture does seem to refer to "spaghetti straps" so I'd say don't change it. The alternatives sound strained.

Here are a couple of fashion glossaries to help:

FOR AILISH: Here is a website where you can see photos of different skirt types. http://www2.bridesave.com/search/index.cfm?action=search&dep...
What you are describing in the back seems variously to be called a "drape effect" or "draped skirt" or a "feature". The fitted fashions are the "sheath" or "cone" and also the "mermaid/trumpet" (fishtail), the difference being that the sheath/cone is not flaired (but may have a drape effect on the back) and the mermaid/trumpet/fishtail is flared from the knees. I hope this helps. I CHANGE MY ANSWER TO "SPAGHETTI STRAPS" and "DRAPED SHEATH/CONE SKIRT" (or "SHEATH/CONE SKIRT WITH DRAPE").

The drape or feature may also be a detachable train, as you will see in the photos at the site I've given you.
