English term

axilla

English Medical Medical (general)
[Objective]
We examined whether unilateral acupuncture stimulation on the acupoint ‘Kenkobanten’ located below the axillary region increased the range of motion of the opposite hip external rotation and raised skin temperature at the hips and thighs.

Are 'axilla' and 'axillary region' different in meaning and in this case is 'axillary region' appropriate?

Thank you.

Veronica Allievi Dec 26, 2019:
Anatomic regions A region in anatomy is not just an area. It is a defined area that has a certain name, such as the 'mediastine' or ' mediastino' which gathers heart and lungs area inside plus other bones musles etc in the 'region'. So 'region' is a jargon term, not just an area. It is a defined area with a name, sich as 'mediastine', defined by anatomists. The axillary cell -or cavity- (so would it be called in Spanish at least) , is not a region.
Mitsuko Yoshida (asker) Dec 26, 2019:
Additions The subjects were nine healthy subjects (mean age: 20 years old) with limited hip external rotation range of motion. After adaptation in a constant temperature and humidity room, we measured the hip ranges of motion and skin temperature in the hips and thighs. Next, we conducted acupuncture on the acupoint Kenkobanten followed by a 1-minute stimulation of pecking sparrow needling, and measured the ranges of motion and the skin temperature in the same manner. A washout period was set for the same subject, and the same procedure was used for measurement control without stimulation.

Anatomically they both define the same location

below the axillary region vs below axila
Anatomically they both define the same location. The later uses less words, and I think it is better.
I personally think that in scientific articles redundancy should be avoided, precise and concise wording should convey the observation(s).

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : The acupuncture point is BELOW the axilla (precise), not IN the axillar region (vague).
