Perhaps just this character's personal choice of a venerated object to swear by.

@philgoddard Maybe! And the other characters keep saying phrases such as Gasping Gecko, Slithering serpents, Cool Chameleons, Fluttering feathers, etc.

Could well be. I didn't mean a real oath, either, more like an exclamation of surprise, as in "by my cat's whiskers, look who has come!"
