English term or phrase: Stayed lean
Hello everyone,
I am not sure what is meant by this term in the following context:
"West Side United coalition (WSU) is an example of a coalition that is evolving, but very carefully. Its mission to close the racial life-expectancy gap can be achieved only through a sustained, long-term effort to align on many fronts: employment, education, housing, health care, and economic investment. Although WSU brought on an executive director after a few years, it has stayed lean with high member engagement. As it took on more tasks during the pandemic, a big question for its leaders was whether to reduce dependence on it first home, at Rush University Medical Center, and become its own entity. The decision was to set up formal legal structures while still emphasizing strong leadership from its members."
This is a paragraph of a Harvard Business Review article titled "Creating High-Impact Coalitions."
Thanks in advance

Explanation:
Lean management is a business methodology that's designed to increase quality and efficiency by eliminating wasted resources like time, money, and effort. It also is sometimes referred to as lean production or lean manufacturing. The idea is to produce only the best and most valuable services or products for customers and clients at the right price.

agree  philgoddard: I don't think a definition should include the word being defined. But yes, it means small and efficient.

-> Sounds like a very sound idea! Thanks.

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: yes, lean=no fat or surplus/excess. "lean with high member engagement". Bottom-up rather than top down
