Definition from
Reel Club:
In popular cinema, the bookend technique is most often used to refer to a parallel between the opening and closing sequences or shots in a film. The first scene is re-visioned, with only minor changes, in the film’s final scene leaving the audience with a feeling of completion; what was started is now finished.
Example sentences:
Video essayist Jacob T. Swinney captured our attention in a big way with a simple video that juxtaposed the first frames of a film with the last. He's back with the third installment of his popular "First and Final Frames" series, complete with some of the best films of the year, to give us the chance to explore, once again, the way films are bookended and what can be learned from it. (No Film School)
But Soderbergh knows how to make a sleek thriller, and such keen professionalism would be missed, from the film’s bookends and fine cynicism as chilly as the ending of “Contagion,” to its prismatic, centripetal play with who the central character really is. (New City Film)
