While "unspeakable" here is "inexpressibly bad or objectionable", in the context of this sentence, I am questioning the need of make "evil" explicit, or otherwise.

1. Cometían atrocidades incalificables, ocultos tras el velo del secreto/tras un halo de misterio.
2. Hacían actos de maldad atroces, ocultos tras el velo del secreto/tras un halo de misterio.
3,4. Hacían un mal desafiaba su expresión/toda descripción...,

I'd probably go with my option 1., but is there any other better option or idea for this?
