Through a process called PCR, or polymerase chain reaction, small amounts of pathogen DNA are amplified — or copied --- to sufficient levels for detection. Studies of isolated pieces of DNA are nearly impossible without PCR amplification.

ポリメラーゼ連鎖反応は、DNAサンプルから特定領域を数百万〜数十億倍に増幅する、分子生物学の分野で広く使用されている一連の反応またはその技術である。英語表記の頭文字を取ってPCR法、あるいは単純にPCRと呼ばれる場合が多い。「ポリメラーゼ・チェーン・リアクション」と英語読みされる場合もある。DNAポリメラーゼと呼ばれる酵素の働きを利用して、一連の温度変化のサイクルを経て任意の遺伝子領域やゲノム領域のコピーを指数関数的(連鎖的)に増幅することで、少量のDNAサンプルからその詳細を研究するに十分な量にまで増幅することが目的である
