Downcycling is the recycling of a material into a material of lesser quality. The obvious example is the recycling of plastics, which turns them into lower grade plastics. This term was coined by William McDonough and Michael Braungart in the book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things.
The terms downcycle and downcycling were first used by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH and Thornton Kay of Salvo Llp in 1993, along with the terms upcycle and upcycling.

Daur ulang turun memiliki makna pengolahan atau penggunaan kembali barang bekas pakai menjadi produk atau materi lain yang memiliki kualitas kurang dari sebelumnya. Contohnya, pada kasus kertas. Ketika kita mendaur ulang kertas menjadi kertas kembali, sebenarnya kita telah menurunkan kualitas kertas dari yang ada sebelumnya.
Begitu pula dengan bahan plastik. Coba perhatikan label daur ulang dengan angka di dalamnya, yang biasanya dibubuhi pada produk jenis plastik.
