We call a square matrix A ill-conditioned if it is invertible but can become non-invertible (singular) if some of its entries are changed ever so slightly. The condition number of A is a measure of how
ill-conditioned A is and can be found using A and A-1. The bigger the condition number is the more ill-conditioned A is. Well-conditioned matrices have condition numbers close to 1.

किसी वर्ग आव्यूह A को कुप्रतिबंधित आव्यूह कहा जाता है यदि वह व्युत्क्रमणीय हो लेकिन अव्युत्क्रमणीय (एकल) बन सकता हो यदि उसकी कुछ प्रविष्टियाँ बहुत धीरे-धीरे बदली जाएँ। A की प्रतिबंध संख्या इस बात की माप है कि A कितना कुप्रतिबंधित है और A व A-1 का उपयोग करके निकाली जा सकती है। जितनी बड़ी प्रतिबंध संख्या होगी, A उतना अधिक कुप्रतिबंधित होगा। सुप्रतिबंधित आव्यूहों की प्रतिबंध संख्या 1 के आसपास होती है।
